Palm oil: the good, the bad and the ugly
Tibbe VerschaffelOil palms grow best in low-lying, warm, and humid regions around the equator, precisely where tropical rainforests thrive, but also in the hot savannas of Central Africa and Latin America. The development of palm oil plantations has led to large-scale deforestation, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia.
What's the problem with palm oil?
Hectares of trees are being cut down with all the consequences that come with it:
- Local people and endangered animals are losing their habitat
- The destruction of forests and the draining of peatlands creates highly flammable areas. Indonesia literally burns to the ground every year. The suffocating smoke causes serious health problems for hundreds of thousands of people.
- Deforestation, often accompanied by severe forest fires, releases large amounts of CO2. This accelerates the change in the Earth's climate.
- The use of pesticides on the plantations completely depletes the soil and causes irreparable damage.
