What is the Curly Girl Method?

As you already know, the Curly girl Method is a way of hair care that brings your curls back to life. Specifically, the CG method involves exchanging harmful habits for healthy hair care products. But what are healthy and unhealthy hair care products?

What should you avoid with the Curly Girl method?

If you are willing to apply the Curly Girl method to your hair, you should be prepared to avoid some ingredients in shampoos and other hair care products. Hot styling appliances are also out of the question.

Harmful ingredients for your hair

Harmful ingredients can be a very confusing term if you have never heard of them before.

You should focus on the fact that your shampoo or conditioner does not contain sulphates. Sulphates are used in shampoos to create lather and shine. But they actually make your curls too clean: they strip your hair and scalp of their natural oils, leaving you with dry curls in the long run.

Sulfates are indicated in the following ways on labels: SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or ALS (Ammonium Laureth Sulfate). Besides sulphates, it is also recommended to avoid silicones, parabens, oils, some alcohols and perfumes. Please note that this concerns oil-based silicones and oils of non-vegetable origin.

Hot styling tools for curls

Hair dryers, straighteners or curling irons may seem like an easy short-term solution to a bad hair day. In the long run, it's a different story. The heat that you put on your hair with those types of styling tools dries out your curls. This causes your curls to lose their natural shine and become weak. Moreover, you will quickly have to deal with split ends, dull and lifeless hair.

Hair colour

Curly hair in general has a dryer structure than other types of hair, so hair colouring will dry out your curls even more. However, there are many alternatives to colour your curls in a nurturing way. In any case, be very careful with hair colour and take care of your curls intensively.

Washing your curls too often

When you start the Curly Girl Method, you will probably have to change your whole routine. This includes not washing your curls too often. It is recommended to leave at least a few days between washes. Washing your curls daily too aggressively removes the natural oils from your hair, making it harder to moisturise your curls.

Combs and brushes

Curls should generally be combed as little as possible to avoid frizzy hair and split ends. Due to their dry structure, curls are more sensitive to combs and brushes.

What products should you use with the Gurly Girl Method?

To start the Curly Girl method you need a few products without harmful ingredients:

  • Sulfate free shampoo. Massage your scalp well and rinse gently.
  • Silicone-free conditioner. While applying the conditioner, you can untangle your curls with your fingers.
  • Cream to define your curls. This step is optional, but many curly girls like to use a product that nourishes and defines their curls even more.
  • Cotton t-shirt to plump up your hair.

How do you get started with the Curly Girl Method?

If you want to start with the curly girl method, it is important that you know your hair characteristics. Besides your curl type, hair thickness and density, it is also important to recognise your hair's elasticity. Every curl type is different, with its own characteristics.

Therefore, it is important to determine your own hair characteristics so that you can determine which hair care regime is best for your curls.

Curly hair can be divided into different curl types: wavy, curly and coily. Knowing your curl type will allow you to adjust your routine, products and hairstyles accordingly. With this knowledge, you can create a more beautiful and healthy curl.

How to determine your curl type?

Is this all new to you? Then it can be quite a challenge to determine what type of curl you have. The chart below shows which types of curls there are and which products are best for them.

Fine Hair

With fine hair, it is important to use light products that do not weigh your hair down.

Wavy hair or loose curls

These types of curls are flexible and pliable. As with fine hair, it is recommended to use products that do not weigh hair down. That way, the curls or waves can keep their shape well.

Coarse curls

Curly or spiral-shaped hair tends to fluff easily. That is why moisturising products are perfect for this type of curl. That way, they will stay beautifully defined for at least a few days.

Spiral curls

This hair structure is the driest of all curl types. Intensive moisturising is a must here!

CG-proof with WONDR

Curls are naturally drier, so good care is definitely a must. The WONDR shampoo bars are moisturizing, contain natural ingredients and offer the care that your curls need. The WONDR bars are also free from harmful ingredients such as sulphates, silicones and parabens. They do contain moisturising and caring ingredients such as shea butter, aloe vera, jojoba oil and argan oil.
