Microplastics in the brain: Another reason to choose WONDR
Fleur Van Den BulckRecent American research shows that microplastics can penetrate deep into our brains and that the amounts in our bodies are increasing. Researchers from the University of New Mexico discovered that on average 50 percent more microplastics were found in the brains of deceased test subjects than eight years ago. This raises serious questions about the impact of plastic on our health.
What are microplastics?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles (smaller than 5 millimeters) that are released by, among other things, the wear and tear of plastic products, synthetic clothing and car tires. They are everywhere: in the ocean, on mountains and even in the air we breathe. Microplastics have previously been found in the blood, placenta and lungs of humans, but this new research shows that they are also present in large quantities in the brain. On average, 4,900 micrograms of plastic particles were found per gram of brain tissue, which is almost 0.5 percent of the brain weight. 🧠
Plastic and our health
The impact of microplastics on human health is not yet fully understood, but what we do know is worrying. For example, the researchers found up to five times more microplastics in the brains of deceased subjects with dementia. Although the study does not establish a direct link between microplastics and the development of dementia, it is worrying that plastic particles can accumulate so easily in our bodies.
Why choose plastic-free?
This research underlines once again how important it is to make conscious choices as a consumer. At WONDR, we are committed to a more sustainable future by developing plastic-free, vegan and natural care products. Our products do not contain harmful microplastics and are completely biodegradable. By choosing plastic-free alternatives, you not only reduce your own exposure to microplastics, but you also contribute to a cleaner planet. 🌍💖
Science is still working hard to unravel the effects of microplastics on our health, but one thing is certain: prevention is better than cure. By switching to plastic-free products, such as WONDR shampoo, conditioner and shower bars, you are making a conscious choice for your health and the environment.
